The soil surrounding the rocks is a rich & fertile home to multiple ecosystems, and they provide a vantage point for predators. This fiery Expedition is named after Turkmenistan’s famed Karakum desert, home to the Darvaza crater, or the “Gates of Hell”. The massive man-made sinkhole has been leaking methane gas for decades, showing no signs of burning out anytime soon. Karakum Desert is also known by Gara Gum (“Black Sand”), and it occupies around 70 percent of Turkmenistan, extending some 500 miles (800 km) from west to east and 300 miles (500 km) from north to south.
